The main rival of the Canon Rebel Xt, the Nikon D50, is in stock for as low as $845 shipped on eBay and under $900 in online stores. Someone on Flickr already took photos with his D50, and Digital Camera Resource Page has some photos as well.
Digital Photography Review has a thorough preview while LetsGoDigital has a review of it.
I am still undecided as to which digital SLR I will get, but I'm leaning towards the D50.
